Review on Dark Gray FLIR Ocean Scout TK Monocular by Ashton Dahmer

Revainrating 5 out of 5

If you are looking for an entry level IR oscilloscope then this is for you

IR oscilloscopes can cost thousands of dollars costs. However, if you like to keep your feet wet, then this model is for you. It's not military grade, but it does amazing work in the dark on a tight budget. For example, on a warm, humid night, I was looking through the scope next to the woods on my property when I noticed several heat sources about 40 feet away. Turns out there were four deer I never would have known about. The trick is that you need to use the best preset that contrasts the heat sources against the background. Cats and birds are still difficult to see because they have smaller heat signatures. Basically, the larger the object, the easier it is to see. The colder and less humid the night, the better she sees. This scope is all about the contrast between target and background. If you have additional questions, please see FLIR Benefits and Limitations. Pros: great price, seven different settings to help you see objects based on conditions, take photos and videos, use day and night, no light source required. Cons: the picture is not very clear beyond 75-100 meters, the battery life is about 2 hours, the monitor refresh rate is slow. Don't expect to chase fast moving cars. Works best in cool conditions. in summary. If you want to track the Taliban from thousands of yards, be prepared to shell out $$$$ or more. If you want to see deer or man-sized objects 100 yards away in a field, or see if that weird car parked down the street has been driven recently, then this is for you. I personally think I made an excellent purchase.

Pros
  • Compact handheld thermal imager, see heat instead of light - see marine mammals or explore wildlife on the shore
Cons
  • I'll write later
