I am very pleased with my purchase of the DeLorme InReach Explorer. Thanks to solo hiking and camping, my family doesn't have to worry about where I am and can call search and rescue services if needed. Pretty easy to set up for the first time, just follow the instructions on YouTube. Note, however, that this will take some time as the phone must first "connect" to the satellite. I've opted for a plan where you have the freedom to activate your phone when you need it. There is a limited amount of text messaging etc but as a secondary resource it is good. The phone costs less than Garmin and the face is smaller. But overall it was perfect for my needs. Looking at the overall cost, the DeLorme was by far my favorite given the overall satellite's reliability, safety, and less expensive/flexible plans (now owned by Garmin). We have just returned from a few days in the mountains. . The weather changed and due to the failure of some gears we decided to shorten the trip. I had no cell phone coverage for miles and all I had to do was text my InReach to the local transport company along with the time and location. That's easy! I deducted a star because the text messages are very slow and the letters are VERY small. Otherwise would buy again!
