Review on 🔩 IVY Classic 46152 Forstner Extension: Achieve Precise and Extended Drilling Performance by Adam Ross

This is for a 5 piece set ranging from 3/4 to 1-3/8. This is a nice handy little set that fills a niche in the market for those who don't need big or special sizes and may already have a few small parts in their toolbox, and the wooden box is cool and pretty (and well made). To be honest I've used some of the Ivy Classic tools and they've never impressed me, but I don't think any of them suck and some of them are pretty good - I think they're trying to fill mid-table in terms of quality . but often overpriced when you consider. They can even fare a lot worse than some of the bigger well-known brands. The bits themselves aren't particularly well made so you should probably expect some sharpening before use or shortly after use - mine was fine out of the box but with a half hour diamond and ceramic touch. above, they are cut very well and nicely. For central areas, any straight stone that is not too thick will do - the point should not be too sharp. The outer edges are difficult to sharpen, so it is best to use a small round sharpening stone. Luckily the outside edges of all my bits, while not the sharpest, were decent enough and there weren't any large flat areas that needed extra grinding to fix them like you typically see on many cheaper Forstner bits these days. The photo shows the first test holes in old pine and red oak after undercutting. The best part is that it's HSS so it's well worth the effort and the price for this set is really fair - however I'm wondering if this isn't just the cheapest M50 industrial steel given the very low Rockwell hardness. It's not Freud or Fishe quality, but it's a lot better than the junk I've seen lately from Irwin, Dewalt, Bosch, the old Porter Cable, and it's a lot better than any number of cheaply imported " Brands". there. While for many items I can disapprove and recommend items other than the Ivy Classic, I think this series of Forstner bits from them is a great purchase and a worthy tool to own.
