Saves time, effort and spice

I used this with 2 ciders and 2 beers along with my hydrometer and brewzor calculator for android. This is a free set of tools similar to those available from Beerssmith or Northern Brewer http://www.northernbrewer.com/refractometer-calculator/. You need such a calculator to properly use the refractometer. If you didn't know that once your wort begins to ferment, the presence of alcohol changes the way light travels through the prism, skewing your results, these calculators will help you with that. However, when I averaged three refractometer readings along with my hydrometer, the readings were so nearly identical that they didn't matter (average 0.002 difference in gravity readings). I'll be checking with my hydrometer for a while, but already I find this redundant, unnecessary, and a waste of must. Using a small dropper is much easier than using a thief. Once my sample is in place, I prefer to use my phone to snap a picture through the eyepiece. This way I get a bigger and more legible image, I don't have to mess with the refractometer's focus, and I have a photo report (renamed with the date and what I measured) of my measurement to add to my notes later . It takes a bit of fiddling to align the images properly, but it gets easier. A NOTICE. My refractometer is already calibrated. I don't know if that was intentional or coincidental. In any case, it is better to check the calibration yourself
