Review on πŸ”Œ D-Link DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem (DCM-301) - Comcast Xfinity, Time Warner Cable, Charter, Cox, Cablevision Compatible and More by Colin Arcos

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Save money on modem and electricity rentals from day one.

Ready to go in 10 minutes on Comcast in Minneapolis. At the end of June I bought a D-Link DCM-301 for $29.99. Renting a modem here costs $10.74 per month. with taxes. In this case, the payback period is less than 3 months. This modem has 8 channels down and 4 channels up. That means a download speed of 340 Mbps plus or minus. My plan gives me 70Mbps uplink and 5Mbps uplink. I measure 83Mbps upstream/6Mbps with speedtest.net and fast.com. downlink and 4 uplinks. Although I've heard and expect less peak hour congestion and due to the addition of channels I should have more capacity for future speed bumps. Latency seems to be improved and the real world is a bit sharper too (or am I imagining it). The DCM-301 is also energy efficient. Measured power consumption on a Kill-A-Watt meter at the AC end of the included switching power supply. is 5 watts (about 2 watts less than my previous Arris WBM760a). This modem is not "hot" to me, not even warm. It's on a flat surface where nothing is, or upstairs in a room with a temperature of 72 degrees. While I run it horizontally. The kit includes a bracket for vertical placement. Mounting slots are provided for wall mounting. If you think your modem is hot, dust it off and give it some air. lasts forever if they survive the first few days and don't get struck by lightning. (Use a good quality surge protector for all your devices). Here are the approximate numbers for those trying to use a UPS for backup power. A-Watt P4400 kWh Meter 121.7VAC/0.08A/5W/10VA/0.51PF (Power Factor) That's just over $5/year at $0.12/kWh. I'll try to post a cumulative kWh reading in a few days when I get my VoIP and router.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Difficult to remember but
