Review on Pacsafe TravelSafe 12L Portable Security Safe Lockbox by Louis Loebis

Revainrating 4 out of 5

It ain't Fort Knox, but it gives me some piece of mind while traveling

I've lugged the Pacsafe 12L "safe" around the world a couple of times and it's been great. We used it in Europe last year to keep the hotel staff from filching our "safety cash" from the room. We used it just a few weeks ago for a family trip to New Orleans to store my iPad, 3 Nooks, my wife's jewelry, and some othe assorted stuff while we were out exploring. I used it in Russia to hold my iPad and an external hard drive with some important data on it so that the KGB wouldn't take it.It's hard to proove a negative (would my stuff have been stolen anyway?), but each time I've successfully returned home with all of my posessions in-hand.Pacsafe has a couple of size options, and I opted for the medium-sized one. The smaller one didn't look large enough for my iPad, and the larger one looked like a body bag. The 12L that I bought is large enough to store my 13" MacBook, but not my 15.6" work laptop. The iPad fits nicely, with quite a bit of room to spare for other assorted items like my camera, iPhone, etc.It rolls up into a fairly small package, but the wire mesh integrated in the bag keeps it from being completely foldable. The locking mechanism consists of a hard plastic latch (that I really hope has metal internally) attached to a steel cable with a metal "bead" on it that goes through the latch. You pull the cable through the plastic latch until the bead comes through, then you wrap the end of the cable around something sturdy and put a lock through the plastic latch and a loop on the end of the cable to secure everything thereby locking the bag closed. It's hard to describe, but works effectively.I'm sure that anyone with a good pair of lineman's pliers and/or bolt cutters could cut the cable and run off with your stuff, but hey, it's better than nothing, and I daresay more secure than many of those hotel safes.I'm happy I bought it, and as I said, so far I've come home with all of my stuff, so what more can you ask than that?

Pros
  • Made with durable, water-resistant materials
Cons
  • Lacks ventilation, which could cause odors or mold to develop over time
