This instrument will momentarily display a black reading while the black terminator itself is not connected to the ends of the cable. I moved into an old house that had a lot of wires going through the subway, and that house also eventually had Comcast, at&t tv, and direct tv service, so there were a lot of wires going through the subway. I've tried tracing all the wires and was able to find the wires going to my bedrooms, hallways etc but 2 unknown wires have the tool marked black where I didn't even connect the black terminator to one of the ends (those 2 Cable is most likely connected to a direct TV dish, but I'm not interested in testing it as I currently use cable TV). So my understanding is that the tools think something is connected to the other ends and mark it as black (which in turn gives an incorrect reading if you use a black terminator somewhere).
