I use this heater with a programmable thermostat controller to keep my terrarium at a constant temperature. It has an unmarked rheostat (like a radio switch) that serves as an on/off switch and power level control. I tried the highest setting first but it was too hot so I run it on the lowest possible setting and it shuts down and cools down. My terrarium was well below the set temperature several times and I had to shake the control knob for it to work. The heating element is encased in thick plastic and appears almost waterproof. An unlabeled controller is difficult to set up and will stop heating for no reason.
