3M make very high quality products. Your masking tape is both sticky and covers what's underneath, just like good masking tape, but it also peels off without leaving a sticky residue. The texture is very "papery" for easy tearing, but the tape doesn't unexpectedly come off the roll without conscious effort. The packaging quality is impeccable.
