Review on πŸ–₯️ Fujitsu iX500 Color Duplex Image Scanner for Mac or PC (2013 Release) - Discontinued by Manufacturer - Enhance Your SEO by Sean Lafond

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Excellent scanner not intended for direct use with Adobe Acrobat software

Pros: 1) Fast 2) Excellent scan quality 3) Excellent and highly compatible PDF output 4 ) single pass ( double pass) ) two-sided simultaneous scanning) 5) competently scans everything (from a gas station check to voluminous financial documents) 6) the one-touch function is pleasant. Functional and fast. Cons: A) NO TWAIN/WIAB scanner drivers) Cannot be used with the built-in scanning features of Adobe Acrobat, Nuance Power PDF, etc. C) The included ScanSnap Manager software is cumbersome to use, the user interface looks like it was developed in the early 90's) Intermediate and advanced users may have trouble with the default settings until they get them right (scan destinations, document categories, etc .). very good team. Scanned images are crisp, have excellent resolution and produce crisp, high-contrast, legible, indexable PDFs with OCR capability. Single-pass scanning (both sides simultaneously) is also an amazing feature. And don't tell me I can scan almost anything I throw at it, from tiny scraps of thermal paper receipts to long double-sided financial documents, this scanner scanned and scanned and scanned and I had almost no problems. I have used this device for over 500 scanning jobs over the course of several days and this scanner has made my job easier. It took a bit of work to get the ScanSnap Manager to organize the files the way I wanted, but that too was customizable. The one-touch scanner function also made quick scanning easier. No matter how I used this scanner, I felt extremely comfortable with each scan knowing the scanner was doing what I needed and my scans were coming out in the best possible way. The only downside to this device is that it doesn't come with TWAIN, WIA, or other popular scan drivers. You CANNOT use this scanner in conjunction with Adobe Acrobat or Nuance Power PDF or similar. You'll have to search a lot to find even one place where Fujitsu specifically acknowledges this; I found it hidden in an internet FAQ, and even then it was more of an omission in the list of TWAIN/WIA compliant scanners than a direct admission that this device didn't have it. It is serious, intentional product maliciousness that Fujitsu made such great hardware and then decided that the only software that could talk directly to it was ScanSnap Manager. So how and why do they advertise Adobe Acrobat compatibility? The PDF files created by ScanSnap Manager are 100% compatible with Adobe and every other software package I have in my arsenal. I found NO PDF document scanned by my device that didn't work anywhere else. However, if you want to use Acrobat's built-in scanning software/features (Create new PDF from scanner) or some other package, you're 100% out of luck. Why did I give the product 3 stars? Why not 4 or 5 or even 1? It was a difficult decision for me. On the one hand, I cannot doubt the quality or performance of the Fujitsu hardware, nor will I minimize the PDF output using the ScanSnap software. The scanner has a 5 star rating and the PDFs I've created with it also have a 5 star rating. The blatant omission of TWAIN/WIA scanner drivers is either laziness or, at worst, cost savings. The TWAIN/WIA drivers and subsystems used by operating systems and applications are proven and otherwise very functional standards. Your willful exclusion from this product - ESPECIALLY in this price range - is on the verge of a criminal offense. This would be rated 1 star or 0 stars if possible. The ScanSnap software is fine at best. It's clunky, inelegant, uses poor default settings (in my opinion), and looks like something straight out of the early '90s. It's not clean, simple, or straight-forward (although you can "get used to it"). I would give the included software a 3 star rating at best (and that's generous). It works out? Of course. Is it working fine? Not as much. I would say if 1) your needs are simple enough and 2) you don't have an established scanning workflow and 3) you want the best scan/pdf quality money can buy for a home/small home office, this machine is for you definitely worth a look (although it might still be overkill for the typical home user. On the other hand, if 1) you need/want to work directly in Adobe or Nuance or other software packages, 2) you have an installed scan workflow with one of the packages mentioned above (or even with an OS-provided batch scan application), 3) You intend to use this scanner as a regular system device and be able to use it from any OS or application package as needed Wait, this device is NOT what you are looking for . Period. In comparison, the Brother ImageCenter ADS-2800W wireless document scanner has all Fujitsu features and functionality, including TWAIN, WIA and other scanner drivers, and costs $10 less. I'll try that next time.

Pros
  • High test scores for support and durability
Cons
  • Not as thick as other scanners
