Counter Clipper's best friend.

I collect and play a lot of different board games, but mostly war games. The game pieces that come with these games are usually printed on sheets of cardboard and then cut out to make it easier to remove the pieces from the sheet. However, these sheets are generally not cut completely around the tokens to be stapled for sorting, shipping, etc., requiring the game purchaser to punch out these tokens before the game can be played. Unfortunately, this perforation process creates small protrusions at the corners of the pieces that look unsightly, and they can also interfere with the handling of the pieces by snagging on adjacent pieces or making them difficult to fold. Even if many board players don't mind. With things like this, some of us take the time to trim feathers to improve the look of an in-game item and improve handling. (It's not an easy task, some games can have hundreds of pieces!) Over the years I've tried many different trimming methods using different knives, nail clippers, etc. After some research I came across this hair clipper kit from Oregon Laminate and I decided to give it a try. Of course, these nail clippers don't come cheap, and I've had some considerations about spending that kind of money on something that might be no better than a cheap set of nail clippers. In short, I didn't have to worry because this tool was worth every penny. In the few weeks I've had it I've already cut over 2000 tokens and they all look great. The corners of the counters are nicely rounded and very even with a clean, perpendicular cut. When I first started using the cutter it felt a bit stiff so I lubricated the post rails and that seemed to help. When I cut my first 1000 or so tokens, the cutter seemed more flexible, so it may have taken some time before the nib was a little softer and easier to compress. (It's quite possible the muscles in my right arm and arm have also gotten stronger!) For me, the 2mm cutter radius is ideal because it removes the least cardboard so I don't have to worry about getting some of to be cut off from the printed information about the game piece. I should point out that this is not light equipment. You'll definitely want to put it on a surface if you're using it during an extended cutting session. It took a while but I finally came up with a handy method using an old drinks tray that I can rest on my lap and then place the cutter on the tray. I can have a few uncut pieces right on the tray that I can grab and cut fairly quickly and any small cut pieces stay on the tray. (The last time I timed it, I was doing about 5 or 6 counts per minute, and it wasn't too hasty.) It's kind of an (almost) mindless task you can do while you're watching or listening to music, etc. In a short amount of time you can have a large stack of beautifully cut pieces, and that's a certain satisfaction. In summary the cutter is a great kit that looks well built and performs exactly how I want it to. . I recommend it to all other crazy clippers.
