As a lifelong surfer but having moved to central Texas from California a few years ago I have been fortunate to return to my favorite West Coast beaches fairly regularly. A problem I've always had and which was the biggest hurdle to getting to the water (although its main function is to get me to the water!) has to do with the rental car and the security of my belongings. Anyone who has rented a car in the last 10 years knows the feeling of being handed literally a handful of keys - often two electronic keys, two electronic fobs and an identification tag, all tied together with strong steel wire. Not only are electronic keys unsuitable for slipping into a surfboard's tether or in a wetsuit pocket, it's also impossible to release a single key that can be discreetly tucked under a bumper or wheel well. First, let me be clear that I'm not being too paranoid. If you surf long enough or just enjoy your time at the beach, you'll get robbed. It's a fact. I even gave my favorite sweatshirt to a chilled young surfer from San Diego with a friend who thought he had hidden his keys well enough. Unfortunately, after surfing in cold water on a cold summer evening, they returned to the parking lot to find their car and ALL their clothes completely gone. She sat wet and shaking looking at the scoreboard while her friend walked down the street to call the police. a day bag in the sand hoping that the moment I see someone looking at it I'll be out of the water in no time. This really limits the number of places you can surf and you will always be on the lookout. On my penultimate trip, I was driving through California on my way back from a week-long surf trip to New Zealand (where you can leave a $100 bill on the beach and it'll be there in three hours) and thought I was there until my meetings stayed a day and a half to get into the water. Ultimately I never surfed due to beach construction, time restrictions and tides. I just didn't have the opportunity to get in the water and feel safe enough to enjoy it. This disappointment got me thinking. Should there be an alternative? Back in Texas and after a quick search on Revain.com I found the KeyGuard SL-591-CVR Pro Car Key Safe with Security Cover. He was in my shopping cart even faster and was already driving towards me. Two weeks later it was packed in my surf bag and brought me back to California. At the Hertz counter, I grabbed my car and a handful of keys and headed straight to the beach. After three days and six completely safe sessions, I was as happy as could be with my purchase. In my opinion there is no other key safe on the market like the KeyGuard SL-591-CVR Pro Car Window Key Safe with Security Cover. This is a must-have accessory for the traveling surfer!
