Stick to your metal file!

Media could not be loaded. I saw this on my "Recommended for you" list and decided to order it knowing full well it might be disappointing based only on the photos showing the simple design on the product page. I've also tried other cheap Chinese wood boring tools and they didn't work at all. Cheap? Yes. Good? no As a Revain Vine reviewer, I'm offered free new products on the market in exchange for an honest and thorough review. In fact, this tool did not disappoint at all. It worked exactly as I expected; bad! As an engineer, I am familiar with cutting tools. This chamfering tool is a cone with slots cut into it. It's more of a deburring tool for an already finished bar. The end of the bolt contacts the cone of the tool all the way around, and the edge of each slot cannot cut into the material to remove it. The only point that can get into the groove is the beginning of the screw's thread, which will soon smooth out. When used on a regular rod it just won't cut. There is no cutting edge and the photo on the product page showing large shavings coming off the screw is either a total fake or not a real tool. Tried the tool on a few screws. I used the drill at low speed as recommended, and the tool just rubbed around the end of the bolt, pushing any rough edges rather than shearing them off. He didn't create a nice finished bevel with chips, just smoothed it out slightly with rubbing. As expected, I was luckier as I ran much faster and put in a lot of effort. Very little material fell out of the bolt. Just a random tiny, tiny scale. In fact, you can see one or two in the video. I also used a grade 5 soft coated bolt. Anything harder and I would only get hot! The small-diameter screw must be at least 1 1/4 inches long for the tool to fit the screw. The tool itself is about 1 inch deep. The chamfer created on soft metal is quite long since the included angle of the tool is much smaller than the 90 degrees you would use to create a traditional 45 degree chamfer around the end of the screw. Now for $3.99 I guess you can't expect much more. It kind of works and with some effort "wipes" the corner at the end of a soft metal rod or bolt. Personally, I will continue to break in the bolt with a file. At least I see chips with this one. I would try a wooden dowel. I know it will bevel and blacken the finish at the same time! Don't waste your money, even for $3.99.
