Review on Highpoint RocketStor 6114V Raid 5 USB 3.1 Gen 2 4-Bay Storage Enclosure by Trey Harvey

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Really good for what it is. No, this is not a hardware raid!

Will it be as fast as an SSD? no Will it be as fast as a hardware dedicated raid? no (Check out Mini-SAS and get a good LSI controller). But if you're like me, you need a lot more storage on the cheaper side, you're not a video editor and you're almost exclusively on your standard single-drive case. I am using my Ortho4XP Tile Storage Rig for flight simulation. The single USB 3.0 enclosure was fast enough to quickly load a tile mid-flight, but after surveying the United States with satellite imagery, I ran out of space. I knew that installing raid5 over USB3 would saturate and possibly degrade performance. So I thought I'd give it a shot - it feels a lot better and is more reliable than the other options. As you can see from the screenshots, they won't set any speed records, but 4x 12TB 7200rpm (256MB Cache) HGST HC520 drives hit 400+ MB/s at a high level, matching the write speeds expected from Raid5. Compared to a USB3 case with more than 170MB/s I expect amazing performance. I was considering buying an 8-bay case, but to get the full benefit of it would require at least one mini-SAS card to run it, and the cost just didn't make sense at the time. However, filling this out - on first impressions - I wouldn't think twice about getting a larger case. In terms of case size, this is a nice, tight, small, solid case. Almost 100% metal, very little plastic and the build quality is worth it. There is no vibration during operation of hard drives and extraneous noise during operation. A great purchase so far.

Pros
  • Supports Massive Storage configurations over 40TB
Cons
  • old
