Firstly, ladder ball is my favorite lawn game. Other than that, I've played with several sets of ladder balls. My absolute favorite is this DIY wood set at a friend's house. The problem with this set, and the reason I haven't made my own, is that it's not very portable, which is what got me here. The goal was to find a durable set that would last a while and be easily transported from place to place. First impression: the box arrived safely. When I opened the box I saw a decent bag to carry the set. Everything fits into a bag fairly easily with enough room so you don't have to pack everything in any particular order. It's also very light. Furnishings: Furnishings were very, very basic. Everything seems to fit together, and then you squeeze everything together. I haven't read the instructions, but at first glance it seemed pretty simple. I found it easier to lay a side rail on the floor, lay the cross rails on top and then put another side rail on top and add some weight to get everything together nice and tight. Then flip it over and tuck the set into the legs. Ready for work. Build Quality: The ladders are made of relatively thin metal. They could bend with enough force. They don't look like they will bend with normal use. I've had it for a few months now and haven't had any problems. When I pack it in my car, I don't throw heavy objects at it or anything like that. But I see that it will take at least a few years. Unlike plastic which breaks very easily. The metal is inserted into plastic slots which I think might break after prolonged use or something. But I haven't seen any signs of problems yet. The bolas are rubber, the weight is very good. I also like that the rope is attached to the inside of the ball and not the outside because I've seen those little protrusions snap off and render the bola useless (not that you can't replace them or anything). For the price I paid. This was only a few bucks more than the average plastic set, I would say it was a 5 star choice. If it had been a bit more expensive I might have expected thicker steel or something. This set is definitely sufficient for my portable set. Maybe one day I'll make this set out of wood but so far I'm very happy with my purchase. If anything changes I will update my review.
