Review on Moen Commercial Heavy Duty Shower Only Replacement by Edwin Kreps

Works as a replacement for the Moen cartridge 96909

My house was built in 2001 and one of my Moen tubs with a handle didn't drain cold water. The water only came out when it hit the rotating part of the hot water handle. The original cartridge used in the faucet was Moen part number 96909. This part number has been changed to Moen part number 1222, making this Moen 1222HD a compatible replacement. I was definitely glad I bought the "DANCO Cartridge Puller for Moen (86712)" because without it I wouldn't have been able to pull the cartridge out. I followed all the instructions and was able to remove the old cartridge and install a new, better commercial quality one. The lube that came with this cartridge was a little more watery than what I'm used to compared to regular plumber's lube, but I used the lube that came with it. It was enough to cover the rubber fittings on the replacement cartridge and also enough to cover the inside of the faucet that the cartridge goes into. The new cartridge went in like clockwork. I was amazed at how much easier the tub faucet handle turns now. With the old cartridge, I had to force myself to turn the knob. With a spare cartridge, I could spin it with one finger. Now everything works great and I saved a lot of money. With the money you'll save by not hiring a plumber, paying a little more for this commercial cartridge shouldn't be a problem. In addition to the cartridge puller, I would recommend purchasing an extra retaining clip in case you accidentally lose the original. There seem to be two types of clips on Amazon. One is rounder with more kinks/bends and the other is flatter like brass. The original clip that was on my tub looked like flat brass so I bought an extra one. It was a snug fit on the clamp so I would recommend that you make sure you are using the same clamp as your faucet.
