The roll seemed strange at first because it was lined on the outside; At first I thought maybe I accidentally came up with the double-sided adhesive. But no, it was just one side you peel off the white liner to reveal the adhesive side on the outside. This made it very easy for me to apply for my project - just unfold what I need, peel off the backing and then stick on. A pair of scissors was enough for me to cut it to length, but a box cutter or similar razor will work too. I used it as a spacer for the bottom of a metal vertical bin so I could use it as a "charging station" for my laptops, tablets and phones. The neoprene foam protects my electronics from scratches since they are vertical. This arrangement means I don't need as much desk space to charge everything. I'm very satisfied with this product. Now all I have to do is figure out what to do with the remaining five feet.
