Review on πŸ’Ύ 128GB SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive for iPhone and iPad in Black/Silver (SDIX30C-128G-GN6NE) by Jeff Jemison

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Super device works well but with one big flaw

REVIEW UPDATE 07/06/2017: 4 stars downgraded to 3. This drive works VERY well but with major flaws. Since the end of April 2017, SanDisk has been working on a patch for its application to fix this problem. Here's the problem: the app only shows a portion of the photos you're trying to copy. You will scroll through black screens that only occasionally appear here and there in the thumbnails. (See photo below) Good news: There are photos. Just click on the black part of the screen and more photos with that date will appear. Scroll, press black, scroll, press black. More photos WILL appear. It's a pain, but it's a workaround. (Note: It took two online chat sessions with SanDisk tech support and two more phone calls to finally find a tech support rep who knew about this workaround. Not all of their reps know about it.) I moved on and ran a test. Transfer of almost 700 photos and videos. They crossed in less than 5 minutes with no problems. The phone rang midway through and I took the call. The app continued from where it was when I hung up. (Or maybe it keeps running in the background.) UPDATE: Bad news: If you use automatic backup to back up your iPhone day in and day out, photos with seemingly random names get mixed up. nothing is right PLUS: It removes all GPS location information from metadata. This is a major downside and the reason I'm lowering my rating. It's a complete mess reorganizing hundreds of photos I took on a trip. Next test: Plug iXpand into a USB port on my iMac. (NOTE: This is the hardest USB connector I've ever had. It's VERY hard to plug into a USB connector.) All the photos were there. Again it worked exactly as advertised. Final Test: I transferred some videos from my iMac to the iXpand, then connected the iXpand to my iPhone 6s and the videos played perfectly. (Note: you must view them through the iXpand app.) The app is easy to understand. IRRITATION: Every time you connect iXpand to your phone, a message appears asking permission to communicate with your phone. There doesn't seem to be a way to "remember" this permission and stop this popup. APPLICATION NOTE: There are two SanDisk iXpand apps on the iTunes App Store. Only "SanDisk iXpand Drive" works with this hooked iXpand version. There is another app called "SanDisk iXpand Sync" for another model.
