Here is what Asus told me: PCE-AC88 supports the following channels: 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 100, 104, 108, 112, 116, 120, 124, 128, 132, 136, 140. If the router selects a different one in the channel auto-tuning mode, the adapter will not see the 5GHz network. So far I've set 36 - it's working stably. I wouldn't have figured it out myself, and I wouldn't have guessed.
