Our house is very old. We got very sick last winter and I literally got sick 5 times at the end of the winter months. It was terrible. I got weird sinus and throat infections that I've never had before. The only conclusion we could come to was a smelly musty basement. It has a dirty bottom and can get moldy when wet if you have cardboard. I knew I had to get a better furnace filter this winter. I am very happy with it. I've had the heater on for about a month now and you don't get that nasty basement smell when the heater kicks on and starts blowing through the vents. I wasn't in much pain either. We all usually catch a bad cold when we turn it on for the first time in a week. We all had a mild runny nose for a day or two and that was it. I really think that made the biggest difference! Very happy with it! I would also like to mention that I was particularly impressed by the price. I gave about $43 in change and got 6 18x18 filters. I couldn't find 18x18 at any of my local hardware stores or Walmart. All of this had to be ordered online. From them I could get better quality for less money than from stores that could even be ordered from their websites.
