Review on Winco SS 1211 Sharpening 12 Inch Medium by Deepa Hoover

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The description says medium so it's not a whetstone but to sharpen a dull blade.

I had a set of molybdenum knives over 30 years old that were so dull you couldn't cut your finger. My bread knives were sharper. Knowing that molybdenum is a bit more difficult to sharpen than other steels, I wanted to use a medium/coarse grit stone to at least get them to the edge. This is not a capstone, but it is not called a capstone either (it says "middle" on the right in the description). I'm upset that the description doesn't list grit, so I'm guessing. But whatever the grit, it really is "medium", which means you won't be using it to get a thin edge, you're sharpening your knife and you definitely need to refine it further. .I'm happy. The price was great. The stone is huge. I would say the perfect size, just what I wanted. The stone lies flat on both sides (although the edge is blunter than butter knife blades on 7 different blades, there is a slight bulge in the center on the light gray side). For the price of 1 professionally sharpened knife I have made all my knives and still have the stone to make so many more. I've watched videos on YouTube on how to hold a knife and how to iron it before trying it yourself, you don't want to ruin your blades. I finished my blade with a cheap retractable knife sharpener, then sharpened the edges (see YouTube too) and all my dull knives now cut like new ceramic knives! I would definitely buy it again in 10-20 years when it wears out. What a great $11 investment!
