Messy but works best with tools and equipment

Using a grease gun is inherently a messy endeavour, and this is where a lesson needs to be learned. I think a lot of the negative reviews reflect that fact and not the quality of the product itself. This grease gun is well built, mostly aluminum making it light weight but strong enough not to look cheap. The 12 inch hose extension makes it easy to reach hard-to-reach places. I have used this gun to lubricate the front axle of a John Deere tractor and the reels of a mower and it has worked well. I would recommend not following the instructions to completely remove the foil from the fat. Hoses and only loosely thread the barrel into the gun head when you first pump the gun to allow the lubricant to flow. I did so and the lube splattered all over the place making a huge mess and costing me a tube of lube. Instead, I recommend poking a medium sized hole in the slide and, with the barrel screwed almost fully into the gun's head with the butt in the "out" position, drive the butt into the barrel while you pull the trigger, to let the lubricant flow. The previous reviewer is correct in that the piston usually goes straight through the grease tube's plastic end cap to push out the grease and ends up just pushing the grease directly out. I had no trouble with this as the gun was still able to build up enough pressure to push the grease out, but I understand how frustrating that can be.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • A questionable purchase for the elderly
