Calm down if your car has never had a voltmeter.
I have a 2006 4runner so I was able to install it on the center console. I see a battery voltage of 12.6 when the key is in the ACC position with the engine off. With the engine running I can see the output voltage of the alternator. I have about 14.3 volts. I use the USB port to charge my phone when it's in GPS mode. Very convenient. I felt like my car was a little newer.
