I've tried three different steamers: microwave, electric, and stovetop (this one). The microwave seemed so handy, but it cooks food in the microwave at the same time and most of the food gets overcooked as a result. Not sure how much was microwaved and how much was steamed and there is no control. The electric version cooked better because it just steamed the food. However, it was assembled piece by piece with flat trays for steaming, which caused problems when serving, and there were too many fragile parts. The solution was to move on to the most basic: the oven. You just pour some water on the floor, put food in it and turn on the stove. Ideal. The only problem I had was that the base pan, which is made of stainless steel like everything else, quickly became punctured. Not much, and since it only boils water it's still easy to clean. I believe some foods are slightly acidic. I would like a non-stick coating but couldn't find it.
