Review on Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice Arctic 195/60 R15 88T winter by Wiktor Wiater ᠌

A valuable purchase, some advantages!

I use the 4th season, radius R15. Dignity: allows you to stop on bare ice (although the braking distance is longer than usual, no one has canceled the laws of physics). I recommend it for calm drivers (i. E., those who comply with traffic rules 10.1). At the same time, rubber saves from unexpected, unrecognized conditions such as ice or rolling in front of a traffic light.

Pros
  • Benefits of Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice Arctic tires: 1) excellent traction on deep, freshly fallen or melted snow, due to the lamellas, the entire area captures snow or mud. In the snow, the car is completely obedient at low and medium speeds (up to 60 km / h). 2) on a very slippery road (thawed snow outside the city, rolling in front of a traffic light) due to the spikes and front-wheel drive, the rubber has good handling, but slows down in accordance with the quality of the surface (the braking distance increases by 2 times, only the spikes save). Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice Arctic wheels in this situation ask for cold-blooded actions (do not turn the steering wheel sharply, keep the trajectory, do not throw the gas pedal, especially do not slow down in a turn). But this is an extreme case of a speed selection error (see clause 10.1 of the SDA !). In any case, it is better to slow down before the turn than to have a drift of the front axle. 3) on asphalt, braking is the same as on "summer" (I had to stop due to an accident in front from 110 to 0 km/h in the left lane of the Ring Road with smoke, but without consequences). Works great in the off season. 4) wear-resistant base of square spikes. Good tenon retention for 2 years. During the year, no more than 3 spikes fell out, despite the fact that there were all sorts of cases. 5) high load capacity index: 91 versus 88 for competitors. Relevant for vans, etc. I keep 2.4 / 2.6 atmospheres according to my passport.
Cons
  • 1) It is possible to slip the drive axle when starting off on dry pavement. Especially, when "rolling" the spikes for the first 2022 km. 2) It is possible to block the wheels during heavy braking (ABS is activated). So you need to avoid gross errors in the choice of speed. 3) Be careful with the track - the vehicle may slip into a hollow. 4) The noise is not deafening, but noticeable after the summer. 5) Significant loss of studs on one of the axles after 3 seasons.
