Before that, there was Kensington Orbit, but it has outlived its usefulness (I bought it used and used it for a couple more years, the buttons started to stick). I wanted to buy it myself, but I didn’t find it in stock, and other models with a scroll ring are more expensive and bulky. In general, I regret that I bought it: I hoped that it would be even more convenient to scroll with a button with a ball, but Logitech does not provide convenient solutions out of the box, and third-party ones are also not without flaws (the cursor continues to move). On the other hand, the Kensington scroll ring is also far from ideal - at the end of its life it began to jam (apparently, the dust had accumulated). And in general, I got used to Smart Scroll in a week or two. If Logitech had made native convenient support for the scrolling ball button - I would say that this trackball is the best solution that I know.
