To ensure that your electronic devices are always charged, this item must be included in your travel kit. The USB ports do not require a transformer/voltage converter. Used it on a trip to New Zealand earlier this month. We stayed in 3 different guesthouses and 3 different hotels/motels. Neither had an adapter; I just asked out of curiosity. We would really miss being able to charge our GPS and phones during this trip so I'm sure finding one would be a priority. Much easier to take with you. Some laptops and electronics allow you to select a voltage of 110/220, in which case you do not need a transformer. The ability to toggle the voltage is a handy feature. As none of our rooms had plug adapters to borrow I doubt they would have transformers so check before you go.
