FIX to this review: updated marble dust solution at the end. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Of course I want to read ALL the reviews first. This mortar (bowl) is raw (unpolished) fluted marble, which means that when you grind the spices with a pestle, you're also grinding marble dust (like sand) into the mixture. My husband thought he might be able to polish the bowl with his grinder, but it was still damp and still pulverized enough marble dust to pour into your hand. SOLUTION: I continued reading online trying to find a solution that people really liked and found a solution to a rough flaking interior with marble dust getting into the spices - the solution needs to be "seasoned": Soak the solution in water for about an hour, and then dry the surface. Pour some sea salt at the bottom of the mortar and use the pestle to grind, grind, grind. Substitute the sea salt and grind until the interior is smooth enough that the marble doesn't chip, but still has ridges to hold the spices inside. Problem solved.
