This mortar (bowl) is raw (unpolished) fluted marble, which means that when you grind the spices with a pestle, you're also grinding marble dust (like sand) into the mixture. Overall a great product. Both the mortar and pestle came as a set. I bought this to rub off old watercolors, rewet them and transfer them from a large plastic palette to a smaller Meeden metal travel palette.
