So if you hear a horrible grinding noise on cold starts, before spending a fortune, try replacing the timing chain tensioner first (especially if you have 150,000 miles or more). It's just two 10mm bolts holding it to the back of your 1.8 liter engine. Remember to turn the crankshaft in the REVERSE direction until you hear the tensioner click as it engages the chain. I put mine at 225,000 miles and the rattle is gone and now I have 268,000 miles on the engine and still no noise from the timing chain when starting.
