If you look inside, it's actually pretty low-tech: just a light box with a small CCD and a lens (something like a webcam) and of course, a built-in "system” that controls focus, image capture, storage device, USB drive interface, image display, rotation, etc. However, it works well and gives usable results, unlike the flatbed scanner in my HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus. .When I first inserted a SanDisk SD card into the device, it was not recognized (although I have used the card in several cameras and computers with no problems). So I had to reformat it with Wolverine and then it would recognize it and save the converted images on it. After about 100 scans (I made them in groups of about 30 slides and then transferred them to my NAS, rotated, color corrected, etc.) the converted files from the last group were completely unusable - the SD file system was corrupted Wolverine (see my product photo) and again I had to reformat the SD card and rescan the last 34 or slides (although the screenshot only shows 14 files). The device seems very easy to pick up dirt and hair inside, and it's *not* easy to clean the lightbox/screen and camera lens. They provide a tool, but it's hard to see what you're actually cleaning and access dust and dirt to see if it's really clean or not. The LCD isn't very large or high resolution, so you can't really tell if you have a clean scan until you view the scanned images on a computer monitor. Many of my scanned images need to be rescanned after cleaning the machine and slides. Pooh. I'm glad I bought it and I still have a thousand or more slides to convert but I think at this price point there is still room for improvement on this product. I'm sure you could get better results and reliability if you paid more. but how much more?
