Review on Creality Official Mainboard with Capricorn Extruder by Elmito Yeager

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Pretty impressive in 3D printers

So far I like this printer. The print quality is fantastic. The overall metric profiles on Cura for this printer were surprisingly close to ideal with both pla and petg. The motors are almost silent, and the higher operating temperature of the Teflon tubing is a great addition. For the price I was hoping for more plug and play options. This printer needs additional modifications to reach its full potential. Part of the cooling fan duct is aimed directly at the side of the heater block and needs to be replaced. Target current for Y-axis set too low; and can cause you to skip steps if it hits a drop (this is easily adjusted with a screwdriver and multimeter). The fan used to cool the motherboard is connected to a fan for some reason. So if you barely use the fan, the motor drivers will start to overheat. especially the extruder motor as it is tuned for a very high current. People will see this as severe under-extrusion in the middle of the print. To fix this the fan needs to be connected to a constant 24v supply. very easy to fix. Hot end fan is stupid loud. You can replace it or slow it down a bit, either way the fan runs a lot louder than anything else in the printer. The printing platform should also have more supports to avoid sagging or vibration. (Print correction available) In the future I would like to see the BL-Touch platform auto-level and either a glass platform or a detachable spring steel platform added to the 'professional' printer line. In the end I think updates above 5 and 5+ are good and worth the extra money, but there are still unresolved issues that should have been fixed a long time ago. Thankfully they're easy to fix as a user, but for the price I was hoping it would take a little less work on my part to make this thing the best it can be. For people looking to buy this, yes it can work great in less than an hour after delivery. but it's not quite "plug and play" to get all the performance it has to offer. I plan to spend another hour re-mounting the fan and possibly increasing the Y-axis motor current, and about 12 hours of print time to print the bed supports. not required if you don't often print large models.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • No car
