Review on SUNLITE Training Bicycle Pedals, 9/16-inch by Eric Smalley

I think it's ok, but ball bearings are insanely rough.

If these were the only SPD/cage pedal clip pedals in the world I would use them and I think they are "good". They are solid and the SPD clips fully snap and disengage from my spikes and although the plastic toe clips arrived bent (they do come in a small box after all) I'm sure they'll fit back into theirs after a few uses return to normal shape and work great sneakers. The problem is the ball bearings. Or maybe I should say "ball bearings". I have NEVER had the feeling that new pedals rotate so roughly around an axis. Heck, I salvaged bikes from junkyards and off the side of the road as a kid, and I've never felt OLD pedals this rough before! It's as if instead of axle grease smeared ball bearings, they found pebbles on a gravel road and then smeared them with wet beach sand. Will these pedals eventually "break in" and become slippery? May be. Is it possible to take them apart, replace and grease the bearings and put everything back together? It's hard to tell as the plastic end cap needs a bit of tinkering to get it off and who knows what the bearing rings look like. Oh, and both pedals were polished the same, so that doesn't mean one of them was just a glitch. In someone's factory, it's good that machined parts come out this way. There are also reflectors on one side of the pedals. For pedals designed for the SPIN bike. you use indoors. Where you don't need reflectors. General. And before you think, "Well, maybe it's because you can use them on a real bike?" Okay, so why not have reflectors on BOTH sides of the pedals to keep them safe whether you're wearing cleats or use toe clips and straps with your shoes? No, some people just don't care. Due to the pandemic, bike and bike component prices are sky high right now so you won't find "good" hybrid pedals for less than $50 and if $50 is all you have to spend on pedals and you need SPD one side and touklips on the other, that's fine. Just fine.” I would rate it as minimally acceptable. I returned them and found others, more expensive but with bearings not created by nature.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Big and chunky
