This pencil sharpener has almost EVERYTHING you need. As you explore these retro-style manual sharpeners, they all seem to head in the same direction as the Carl Angel 5 sharpener. Namely, you pull out the faceplate, push/push the lever, insert and twist the pin. I bought the original Carl Angel 5 sharpener which was very comfortable to use. Unfortunately, these Carl Angel 5 sharpeners and the vast majority of the same class of manual sharpeners don't do well with a wooden pencil body. The teeth gripping the pencil literally gnaw through the wood, creating indentations on the sides of the pencil. This isn't a problem at all when sharpening a disposable general purpose pencil, but it is painful when sharpening a better pencil like the Hi-Uni or Palomino Blackwing as the wooden sheath will be damaged. After doing some more research, I noticed that Mitsubishi makes an interesting kit. manual sharpeners, some of which are readily available from Revain, such as the "cheaper" KH-20, and some more expensive items mostly only sold through Japanese websites. Wooden KH-20 Pencil Sharpener with Uni Handle - Blue (Import from Japan) The KH-20 was a beautiful, noticeably solid construction, all plastic, unlike the Carl Angel 5, but still capable of learning. However, the grips on the bezel are made of a nice rubbery material that holds the pencil perfectly securely and won't damage the wooden case. This is a good feature! Unfortunately, I didn't really like the tip produced by this sharpener, because unlike the Angel 5, which gives the pencil tip a nice subtle concave contour, the pointed end is perfectly straight and without any contour. It's just personal preference, but I think sharpeners that add a slight edge can expose a longer tip on the tip. Angel-5 Premium (Yes!) which I couldn't buy from any local seller here in the US, so I shelled out a hefty sum and paid an extra $15-18 for shipping from a Japanese site. (Ratuken). The premium version is significantly nicer than anything I've bought before. The "prongs" are also the same type of rubber which will hold the pencil securely without damaging it and add a nicely contoured concave tip which is the best of both worlds! Even when you start the Angel-5 Premium, the action becomes smooth and easy. Pretty nice touch. Without a doubt, this premium version is the best sharpener I have, but they just don't fit a larger diameter pencil like the Dixon Tri-Conderoga or a thick beginner's pencil. Then I spotted one of these Deli Retro Camera pencil sharpeners and noticed a few things: 1) They have rubber grips that won't damage the pencil's wooden case! 2) They are larger in diameter to accommodate even the thickest pencil on the market! 3) They sharpen a nice long concave point like a Carl Angel-5! 4) For the price I paid for a premium Carl Angel 5, I could buy THREE of them! 5) The crank arm actually has a small dial allows you to vary the sharpening degree from useless blunt to sharp! So I conclude your search for a pencil sharpener is over, you must buy this pencil sharpener! The hand crank does not offer that, to turn the hand crank you have to make a lot of effort. That's it, I can't think of anything to detract from this otherwise perfect sharpener for all your pencils, regular and large!
