Check the performance of your derailleur

I put this cassette with Wolf Tooth Roadlink on my road bike even though my derailleur couldn't handle it. My derailleur (Shimano 105, RD-5700) has 39 teeth according to the Shimano website. For those who don't know, your bike's load capacity is calculated by adding the difference in the number of teeth on the smallest and largest cogs in your cassette to the difference in the largest and smallest front cog (sprocket). This cassette is 11-42 and my stars are 50-34. So (42-11) + (50-34) = 31 + 16 = 47, that's 8 teeth more than my 39 tooth derailleur. So I really needed a long cage derailleur that could handle that kind of power. But it still works fine as long as I'm not trying to shift into either of the top two gears on the cassette while I'm on the largest chainring. If I do that, it will likely rip the derailleur off my bike because there isn't enough chain for those gear combinations. Anyway, I never cross the chain that way, so it's not a problem. I made a video on Youtube explaining the installation. I don't think I'm allowed to post a link here, but if you search "Mounting an 11-42t Cassette to a Road Bike" on Youtube you should find it. If you are still having problems, search youtube for "Maynard the Miser" which is my channel and you will see it in my videos list. I think with this cassette I could climb El Capitan if only I could hold the bike. to the wall. ha ha. This drops my lowest gear combo to 21 inches, which is almost as low as my mountain bike. I only need these low gears on my road bike because I plan to pack it with bike gear and use it for ultra light touring where I could sometimes climb hours of serious climbing with a pack. I'm not getting any younger and had some knee problems on my last tour so that should help a lot. I've ridden about 75 miles since installing this cassette and am very happy with its performance.
