This handle is fine - it's really there, so if you accidentally touch the handle while cooking you won't yell and/or you will not suffer burn. However, after the cast iron skillet has heated up for a while, the thing gets hot. I definitely use a hot pad as well when moving my Lodge pan. I don't blame the product for that because it touches cast iron and manages to stay within human tolerance despite the sheer amount of heat generated. Once I took off the handle while cooking and it cooled down quickly. Maybe more filling could make a difference, but it would also mean more material touching the pan, making it hotter and faster. Note: I am using this on a Lodge 10.25" cast iron skillet. I know the description doesn't say so, but this mini holder fits the pen perfectly (and tightly). I just keep it on the handle all the time to protect myself. Note, however, that this alone isn't enough for a pan that's gone through the preheating phase.
