This is exactly what I was looking for. Our girls are seven and almost two years old and while the eldest is aware of the dangers of knives, the youngest is an acrobat and has recently begun to avoid all methods of child restraint known to man. We have a very sharp set of knives, and I'm starting to get paranoid because she's reaching for them and cutting herself: Enter Joseph Joseph's self-locking utility knife block. It's really genius and I've found it to work with knives as short as my 3.5" paring knife. Hot Tip: The longer you have it, the better it works. With some effort, I was almost able to pull my shortest knife (a 3.5 inch long paring knife) out of the block at first, but now I can't move it without using the release lever. I never felt like my almost two year old could pull a knife out of the block. No way, no way! This block holds six knives, which I was fine with: I put my five most-used knives and one of my steak knives in it. Scissors and leftover steak knives are stored on the top shelf in my kitchen, which isn't a problem as I don't use them very often. You will find that this block is worth the money. I've been feeling a lot less paranoid since putting this in my kitchen and god knows it's a good thing!
