You wouldn't think a grill kit should come with instructions (it doesn't) but I wish it did. how it worked and when I did it I was disappointed. The two central tools just slide out and have just a thin handle coated in a pesky lubricant like petroleum jelly. Not sure if you should clean it or oil it to avoid rust. Anyway, it's not very ergonomic. They're too short for everyday use (it's hot in there, man! The middle two tools extend a few inches, but I don't think the pliers will fit) and too heavy for camping or hiking. the other is light camping (they are heavy and of good quality). I think they're a good compromise for a tailgate (as described) so I'd give them 4 stars if that's what you're going to use them for. Yes, they come in very good condition. box so they make a great gift for your trucker friend. I haven't been able to figure out (no guide) if there's a trick to opening the pliers wider (they only open about 0.75 inches by default). I thought you might have pulled the two rings at the top, like many kitchen tongs work, but they didn't seem to move and were nothing more than springs. 1.5 inch. I may have missed a trick, but one of the two springs ended up breaking in half. It still works, but it's a little crooked - hence much of my frustration with this product, which wanted to be great but somehow fell short.
