Not a bad set but I expected better quality

Sooooo good. it's going to take a long time, but if you start sewing now and see your options, you'll be interested. First some context: I've recently started a sewing class and only tried sewing with a sewing machine a little over a month ago and since I've been enjoying it so much I've decided to invest in some essentials to make my to make work easier and better. . Components separated from trusted brands. Finally I found a company which seemed fairly new and related to Bernina (I liked their machines too and will be tipping the scales for one of them soon) so I was hoping they were trying to establish themselves as quality producers. Several factors led me to purchase this kit: 1. There was something exciting about opening a box of goodies2. At about $18 more in my bill, I got a few small add-ons that I wouldn't have bought otherwise (since it would have cost a lot more), so it seemed like a good opportunity to try out a few gadgets before using them all out. (e.g. 100 clips etc.) 3. I kinda want to see the quality of things before possibly buying an ever flashed car4. The size of the scissors was larger than what I would otherwise buy. Here is, what I think of this set. Good: 1. General useful starter kit2. I love the magnetic pincushion, it's heavy and durable, has a small storage compartment at the bottom, and comes with 25 pins (except for the 100 glass heads which are packaged separately). I also like the groove as it helps to pick up the pen without getting stuck. Unlike some others I've seen, the pins are all in the same direction so they aren't scattered all over the pad. The magnetic thing is great as I have young children and can't afford to keep the needles on and putting them one by one into a traditional pillow when sewing can be a bit of a chore. That being said I can just throw them in the general direction and voila! The scissors are great in the hand - light but strong, and compared to my current scissors (cheap from the local sewing shop) they cut so much better with every millimeter of the blade.3. Thread cutters cut well and I find them amazingly useful (one of those things I didn't originally want to get because why don't you just use your scissors ha! But this little guy makes it easy to get close and parallel to the fabric to trim it to cut the threads)4. The needles work better than the ones I used to have (cheap universal things that come with every sewing kit) and still haven't bent5. I'm glad I have a couple of clips that came in really handy when assessing the fit of a dress, which I somehow sewed faster (and less scratchy to put on) than pinning something you won't sew yet. .5. The marker and pen seem to work fine, but I haven't tried removing the markers yet.6. As long as the seam sensor works properly and the plastic part doesn't move by itself. The one I received is slightly different from the one shown in the photo which is great as it has better contrast as well as notches per inch. I will post some photos. Not so good: 1. The cutting mat arrived warped and still hasn't straightened out despite spending the night under my very old very heavy sewing machine. The photo was taken after trying to straighten it. The rug also has a very strong odor - this bothered me when I unpacked it, but it was much less noticeable on the second day.2. The blade of the scissors is short compared to its overall size. I will post a photo but it is the same size as the blade on my current shears which is an inch shorter3. The labels on the scissors and cutting machine are out of place and it just doesn't give me much confidence in the quality. The photo shows the label peeling off with the scissors. 4. I'm so disappointed in the quality of the tape, it's thin and stiff (it's worse than the cheap Chinese tape I bought at my local sewing shop - total bummer, I photographed two side by side). The kit package says the magnetic cone pads have 60 pins?! what happened to it (I photographed the box and packaging of the needle bar to show the discrepancy).6. There aren't sizes on the clips like on Clover which isn't a determining factor but I just thought it was the standard.7. And just an environmental note: not sure why each item needs individual plastic packaging? Overall this is a decent set to start with but I was expecting better quality. I think time will tell how it performs in the long run. than the cheap Chinese one I bought at my local sewing shop - absolute crap, I photographed two side by side).
