The ladder itself and the mounting plate are very stable! The first thing you have to do is throw away the gear and go to Ace or TrueValue and get the REAL gear! I ended up removing the access panel which stretches the width of the tailgate, using bolts, nuts and lock washers and attaching a panel to the panel (marked of course!), then reattached the panel and installed the ladder onto the mounting panel. ! If you have a truck model that doesn't have an access cover, this is for you! With these changes you'll love the stairs! Also works with a Pace Edwards tonneau cover!
