The knurled part of the spout gives the impression of being flexible, which is actually not the case. The plastic in this part is thinner and tends to chip at those knurled folds. The included cap is placed on the end, so to speak. This is not a perfect fit as the end of the tube is not round. I suspect part of the problem is that it's difficult to hold a full five-gallon can completely still, which puts stress on the "flexible" part of the spout. (And it takes a long time to pour that much down that spout.) That's probably enough for a small can.
