My Hario Technica makes great coffee but ordering butane gas fuel has become almost impossible due to new postal regulations so I gave this model of stove a try. Unfortunately, the brew is pretty mediocre, lacking the smoothness I associate with siphon brews. I suspect it has something to do with the geometry. Instead of a relatively narrow diameter and rounded bottom, the lower carafe is wide and flat. As a result, about 6 ounces of water does not leave the bottom carafe when boiling. That's a lot if, like me, you use 16 ounces of water per batch. In comparison, Technica leaves about 2 ounces behind. And the coffee is brewed at a slightly higher temperature (202F versus 198F for the Technica). Perhaps the coffee is over-extracted. Either way, the brew is second rate, and if you're new to the siphon brew, this model will convince you it's a waste of time. Looks like I'll have to invest in a halogen heater. Update: I threw away the top chamber and tried using the bottom chamber to preheat water on the stovetop. A piece of junk isn't even good for that. Notice in the photo that the base is so wide that the handle is just over the edge? That means if you set the temperature too high or place the glass slightly off-center, you'll burn your forearm lifting it. And because of the strange geometry, you almost have to turn the thing upside down when pouring, so that the steam escaping from the top burns your hand. I give up. It goes in the trash.
