Review on Surco GM100 Gutter Mount Adapter by Evan Calvert

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Poor design and bolts may compromise safety

Pros: Fits most gutter vehicles Cons: Cheap screws that snap if overtightened; the gutter slide screw spins freely on the back making it nearly impossible to tighten; There were no washers in the kit, and the heads of some bolts almost crept through the brackets. Used Toyota 4 Runner from 1988. I just wanted cheap surf stands. I've built custom surf/cargo racks before using serious towers and thought they looked ok. I'm an experienced auto mechanic with extremely high technical skills and I don't mind taking on a project. I used Lowes 3/4 steel tubing and spent $30 on hardened steel bolts to replace the obsolete ones that came with it. I wouldn't trust these racks with a light load. Maybe just a surfboard or a pair of 2x4s from the hardware store. I definitely wouldn't drive on the Autobahn or drive faster than 70 km/h with something important on the roof. Also, if it moves, you could cause an accident or injury. I do not recommend these towers, please spend the extra money on a set of real Thule or Yakima towers.
