No connection to Bluetooth

I was so happy to use this keyboard but Bluetooth doesn't connect to my iPad. The iPad is brand new and connects to other devices, so I know that's not the problem. I've tried everything! It also came with a broken piece so it must have been in a hot room or something. I also received it with a dead battery. After charging it for about 30 minutes, the light actually came on.
