I weld a lot of carbon and stainless steel. 2% provides the best arc initiation and stability for stable arc control of molten steel. The importance of tungsten sharpening contributes to the stability of the arc. For example, grinding tungsten to a 45 degree tip or taper will cause the top band to become unstable and deflect some of the arc off the tip. This is a common problem with TIG welders. To define the arc precisely, I suggest double grinding the tungsten. The first grind should be your regular grind, as you normally would. The top bar of the first grind should be ground down to reduce flavor and gradually tapered as shown in the figure. Excellent tungsten, I will definitely be buying more when my stock runs out. -= David
