Review on πŸ”Œ Cisco-Linksys EFAH08W Auto-Sensing Hub - 8-Port 10/100 Ethernet Fast Hub for Desktop by Rob Madden

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Easy setup, works like a charm!

First of all, the actual picture of the black hub is wrong - the box looks like other modern Linksys router/hubs with light blue and black plastic casing. However, this hub worked right out of the box. It is used for networking between computers running Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Linux using various network cards (3Com, Linksys, NetGear). Been using it for several weeks with no problems. Installation took minutes! Aside from this article, I have purchased and used several Linksys products including several 4-port hubs, a 4-port router, PC network cards, and a laptop card. All worked fine with other network devices I used. In some cases they replaced an item that cost 3-6 times as much but didn't work either! I've noticed that some other users are having problems with this product, so here are some networking tips that might be helpful: 1) Hubs allow computers to talk to each other on a local area network. A hub allows only one computer that is configured for the network to communicate with another computer. 2) To create a LAN that can communicate with the Internet, you must either buy an IP address for each computer and use a hub, or use a router to allow multiple computers on the internal network to see everyone on the Internet as a person with one single IP address. (Don't forget your cable/DSL connection and modem.) 3) The maximum speed the hub can support is 100Mbps, but the speed is also limited by the speed of the network card! Some network cards are only rated for 10Mbps, so that's the maximum connection speed you'll get if you use them.

Pros
  • Rugged construction
Cons
  • No automatic controls
