want speed This is the center for you!

With this model, Linksys has created a really high-quality but inexpensive hub. I was able to just take it out of the box and connect my 3 computers and 1 laptop to the network with no problem. The documentation provided was easy to understand. As a side note, the Linksys home page is full of "how-to" information for beginners as well as some pretty groundbreaking stuff for advanced users (like how to share your cable modem with that particular hub on all your PCs without to pay for it)…

Pros
  • Useful for more than its intended purpose
Cons
  • Quick Start Guide

Easy setup, works like a charm!

First of all, the actual picture of the black hub is wrong - the box looks like other modern Linksys router/hubs with light blue and black plastic casing. However, this hub worked right out of the box. It is used for networking between computers running Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Linux using various network cards (3Com, Linksys, NetGear). Been using it for several weeks with no problems. Installation took minutes! Aside from this article, I have purchased and used several Linksys products…

Pros
  • Rugged construction
Cons
  • No automatic controls

Great for sniffing network packets!

This hub, while dated and ultimately a poor choice for a networking device, serves a purpose if you're an IT pro. Like a real "hub" and not a "switch", it's just a multiport repeater. This allows you to intercept network traffic without having to buy an expensive Cisco device or other port mirroring device. I don't recommend leaving it connected all the time, collisions are not a good thing. But if you're wondering what's going through your network, this is a good cheap tool that gets the job…

Not the best option for sharing a cable modem

I bought this hub after reading reviews of how easy it was to set up so I could use my cable modem with two or more computers. After I got it I checked the Linksys homepage for instructions - there weren't any as they buy their 4-port etherfast cable/DSL router to do the job. I then checked other websites and found that I also needed to buy a router (another $110) or pay for a second IP address ($10 per month). If you only want to use your cable modem for multiple computers, use the Linksys…

Ideal for home or games. Not very suitable for professional use.

I run a NT 4.0 server at home (preparing to upgrade to Server 2000) with 4 Win98 workstations, 1 NT 4.0 and 1 Win2000 Pro and a 3-port print server. I used it for about 2 weeks and switched to a full duplex switch. While playing games with my kids or working on small files, it was great. But when it came to handling huge files (capturing gigabytes of FireWire video) or transferring many small files (photo albums), half-duplex was too slow. A full duplex switch which I also upgraded made things…

Amazing performance but make sure horsepower is ok!

Linksys Hub works great. Its auto-detection capabilities make local and global traffic fly! Just make sure the power supply is right side up (rubber dots down). There are almost invisible vents on the top of the little box and mine was melted upside down! I tried getting a new one from the manufacturer, even faxed a photo of the adapter, but still sent the wrong one. I'll see how it goes, just wait. But in general for the four months he worked it was amazing! Just plug in and get started.

Pros
  • Regular Price
Cons
  • Faulty

That was great of him

Used hub didn't work. Stan didn't have another device to replace it with again. So he refunded me the money. It was great of him.
