I use in a ceramic mug when hiking. To do this, the engine must be started. This thing uses a lot of electricity - I forgot to turn on the engine the first time I used it and the truck's battery died before the water could boil. a cup of cocoa! - the plastic cord stinks, has aired for weeks and still fills the truck with a foul smell when warm. The situation will likely improve over time. TIP - When the mug is hot the element will heat the water faster so I used it for about an hour by placing 3 mugs of hot water in a thermos which stayed hot most of the day. But then again, this is an hour of burning gas for a hot drink, which will cut my time off the grid. If I had a 12v solar panel I would use that a lot more, but as a last resort on a cold/rainy day sometimes you just want a hot drink.
