Great refractometer - how to calibrate it.

As others have pointed out the instructions are useless but the refractometer itself is great once you figure out how to calibrate it. To calibrate, remove the plastic cover from the blue glass lens. Put 3 drops of extra virgin olive oil on the blue lentil. Close the clear plastic lid by applying oil to the entire jar. Remove the round black plastic cap covering the screw and while looking through the eyepiece at a bright light source, adjust it until it reads 71-72. Brix scale. Note…

Best Price Refractometer

Use this advanced optics refractometer to test the water content in honey. Works exactly as described and is very helpful in ensuring I have a low enough water cut for long term storage without fermentation. Takes the guesswork out of extracting honey. Sometimes uncapped honey is fine, and sometimes even capped honey contains more than 18% water. Allows me to mix 14% water content honey with around 17.5% water content honey to get the best overall moisture content. Calibration according to the…

Great refractometer for the hobby beekeeper

As most reviews say this is a great value refractometer perfect for the hobby beekeeper who doesn't want to invest in an expensive instrument. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that the instructions were written for a different refractometer (but they apply if you use the correct standard and adjust accordingly) and the dropper provided is probably not suitable for honey. Using the extra virgin olive oil calibration procedure outlined in other reviews, I obtained results for three…
