We were looking for a barcode scanner that wouldn't break the bank. Our other options cost $350, so we took a chance and ordered one of these scanners. For around $60, we weren't too disappointed to find that the scanner had to be half an inch from the barcode. We use Windows 7 on our computers. I bought two of these scanners for a small library project. Overall I like the product but will not give five stars because as others have said the scanner needs to make flat contact with the surface the barcode is printed on to read the code effectively. Also, I was glad that this scanner is truly "plug and play" on my Intel Macs, even without software. As mentioned in other reviews, this product does not come with a CD but you can program different options by scanning the barcodes in the manual. All of the default settings worked fine on my Intel iMac. Installation was as easy as plugging in a USB cable. The Mac will then display a dialog stating that it cannot recognize the keyboard that is currently connected. Cancel this dialog as it is not a keyboard.
